For Our Kids in the Women’s Shelter, a Back to School Bonanza

For most kids, September means sharp new clothes, backpacks, and supplies. Thanks to our two local benefactors Jennifer Dinatally and Lauren Swartz, our kids in the Women’s Shelter hit the classroom in style. Jennifer,
a realtor at United Real Estate—Strive 212 in Wyomissing gathered the goodies with a friend, with “colleagues, friends and other co-conspirators from my office and Facebook community” pitching in. Well before our neighborhood ice-cream truck had made its last summer run, Jennifer had dropped off 18 huge, personalized gift bags of new clothes, book bags and supplies—one for every child in the Women’s Shelter. “It was truly amazing to make this happen,” she
says. Jennifer’s been involved with Opportunity House for three years. “I started by cooking meals, and decided volunteering here was something I needed to do on the regular,” she says. “The services that Opportunity House provides are essential to this community. As a business owner and Berks County resident, it's my privilege to
help out whenever I can.” Lauren has been volunteering for at least five years. “I've included my friends and family a lot over the years,” she says.  “They helped me put together birthday boxes, collect shoes and clothing, and make bedtime bags.” This past April, she and her mom, Diane Wojciechowski, had a movie day for the children. They made treat bags for all 16 children, and had lots of goodies for both the children and the moms who attended.
“The reason I work with Opportunity House again and again is because of how welcoming everyone is, from the workers
to those living there and using the facility,” says Lauren. Another main reason: her relationship with Kathy Haggerty-Kase, our Development Director of Annual Gifts. “She always gets back to me and is willing to go along with any
ideas that I have,” Lauren says. “I like being involved on the planning ideas end and then getting together with family and friends to fulfill our goal.” Thank you, Jennifer and Lauren, for supporting our mission.
