Homeless & Housing Nonprofits in Pennsylvania

Opportunity House offers emergency shelter and supportive housing services to homeless single men and women and families with children. Like all nonprofits in Pennsylvania, we request help from all corners to do as much good as possible. Good-hearted citizens interested in donating to homeless shelters may assist our endeavors by supplying supplies, money, and time.

Donating Food To Homeless Shelters

When clients arrive at Opportunity House, they gain 24-hour shelter. We provide:

  • Three meals and a snack each day
  • Access to laundry and shower facilities
  • Case management and help overcoming challenges to housing

Additional services we offer include:

  • Supportive services
  • Transitional and permanent housing
  • Childcare services through the Second Street Learning Center
  • Reuse/recycle products through OppShop and our warehouse

Keeping our programs running requires accepting donations from individuals and companies.

Why Support Opportunity House

Opportunity House provides clients with more than shelter. We also offer them food and the essentials of hygiene and self-care. Efforts to help our clients overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of stable housing are integral to the success of our programs.

Through case management, we help individuals gain appropriate ID, licenses, medical care, drug and/or rehab services, life skills, child care, and more. By helping our clients manage these challenges and providing transitional and permanent housing, we chip away at homelessness, one success story at a time. On average, Opportunity House services 500 clients at our emergency shelter each year.

The Second Street Learning Center, an extension of the work of Opportunity House, is a Keystone 4 Learning Center, where we offer early learning and childcare. This center serves 200 children each year in the following categories:

  • Infant,
  • Toddler,
  • Pre-K,
  • Preschool,
  • School-age,
  • Summer Camp Programs.

Another effort we pursue at Opportunity House is to operate OppShop. This retail thrift store location is on 5th Street Highway, and all of the profits are for the benefit of Opportunity House. This endeavor helps our clients, the community, and the environment. Our clients shop the inventory through a voucher system, the community can find excellent deals on essential items, and the environment has fewer items thrown into landfills.

How to Support Opportunity House

When you give your time, money, or items to Opportunity House, you help the area’s homeless population.

Donating money is probably the easiest way that you can help. Feel free to donate at the shelter, the thrift store, or at one of our fundraising events. We also welcome online donations and checks by mail. If desired, your gift can be made to honor a special person or to recognize an event.

Donating time is another essential for Opportunity House. We offer an array of service opportunities, including:

  • Preparing and serving a meal
  • Serving the efforts of the shelter
  • Working on a planning committee for a fundraising event
  • Volunteering at OppShop

Donating items takes two forms. We require new items for the shelter and gently used ones for the thrift store.

Donated items we need for shelter use are those we use frequently. They should be new and unopened.

  • Undergarments for men and women
  • Cold weather clothing
  • Toiletries and hygiene products
  • Laundry products
  • Baby diapers and wipes
  • Bottles
  • Sports bras
  • Socks
  • Period and bladder control products
