Opportunity House Helps College Student Live Her Dream

“I’m not what people believe homelessness is.”Arianna

When you meet Arianna, her confidence and determination stand out. She’s focused on her studies, works hard, and has big dreams for her future. But behind her bright smile is a story of courage, perseverance, and community—the story of how Opportunity House helped her rebuild her life.

Losing Home, Finding Strength

Before the pandemic, Arianna and her mother lived modestly but securely. “We were living paycheck to paycheck,” she remembers. “But when my mom lost her job and rent went up by $500, we had nowhere to go.”

Despite working up to 16 hours a day in security jobs, Arianna couldn’t keep up. Their belongings were stored in a church basement, and they began sleeping in their car. “I’d park somewhere quiet and hope we wouldn’t be told to move,” she says. “I felt invisible.”

Holding On to a Dream

Even amid the chaos, Arianna never gave up on her education. She had earned a scholarship to Albright College, and she was determined to use it.

“I knew college was my way forward,” she says. “But going to class after sleeping in a car or a gym was exhausting.”

For a time, she slept in Albright’s commuter lounge, hiding her situation from classmates. When that was no longer an option, she found shelter at a 24-hour gym, using it to shower and stay warm between classes. “It wasn’t safe, but it was all I had,” she says quietly.

A New Beginning at Opportunity House

Everything changed when Arianna arrived at Opportunity House.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” she recalls. “But from the moment I walked in, people cared. They didn’t judge me—they just wanted to help.”

Here, Arianna finally had what she needed most: stability, support, and a safe place to call home. That first night, I took a shower and cried,” she says. “It was the first time in months I felt human again.”

Now, Arianna lives at Opportunity House while attending Albright College full-time. She’s thriving—studying hard, building a future, and giving back whenever she can.

“Opportunity House gave me more than shelter,” she says. “They gave me the chance to dream again.”

The Power of Community

Arianna’s story is one of resilience, but it’s also a story about what’s possible when a community cares. Every day, families and individuals like Arianna walk through the doors of Opportunity House looking for safety, dignity, and a path forward.

“When I look back, I realize I didn’t just find shelter—I found people who believed in me,” Arianna says. “I found a community that lifted me up when I couldn’t stand on my own.”
