40 Years of Moving Forward

In 2024, we’ll celebrate our 40th anniversary of helping the homeless in Reading and Berks County, Pennsylvania. While it’s nostalgic look back at all we’ve accomplished since 1984, we look forward to new ways to expand our program and enhance our services.

This year we’re focused on key capital projects at Beacon House and Opportunity House.

Beacon House Renovations are Underway

At Beacon House on Schuylkill Avenue, each apartment will be completely renovated to include a new kitchen, bathroom, flooring, and painting.  It’s the first major renovation since Beacon House opened in 1992.

Opportunity House permanent Housing program apartments get an update.

New kitchens at Beacon House.

New, efficient HVAC units were installed in our permanent housing on Beech Street replacing the original units from the late 1990s.

Renovations in Progress at Opportunity House.

We are addressing the increased need for emergency shelter in Berks County. Our renovations will include expanding our capacity and upgrading our existing facilities. The shelter is undergoing significant renovations that include updated bathrooms and shower areas to provide better access for both men and women. Painting, flooring, and windows will give the shelter a much-needed facelift.  Each client will have access to secure storage to retain personal documents like Social Security cards, military IDs, and driver’s licenses while they stay at the shelter.

We are grateful for your ongoing support to empower our clients to improve their lives.
