Donating Used Items to OppShop

Places To Donate Items Reading, PAOppShop is our retail thrift store located on 5th Street Highway in Reading. All of the proceeds from OppShop serve the needs of Opportunity House, and shelter residents are welcomed into the store to select their own clothing through our voucher system.

When you have items that fit in the following categories, consider donating to OppShop:

  • Men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing
  • Media (CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs) in original cases
  • Kitchen utensils and cutlery
  • Dishware
  • Cookware
  • Seasonal items
  • Furniture
  • Jewelry
  • Flatscreen TVs
  • Purses and bags
  • Shoes
  • Toys

We can’t accept chemicals, older model TVs and stereos, copy machines, building supplies, infant/toddler furniture, computer monitors, office chairs with fewer than five wheels, carpets, or tires.

The goods you donate to the thrift store should be free of tears, stains, pet hair, and other damage. Please remember that any resources we have to divert to pay for the disposal of unsalable goods will take away from the services we can provide for the homeless population.

Items within the OppShop inventory that do not sell will be recycled through our warehouse. We have relationships with several recycling companies throughout the country. Each year, we recycle about 700,000 pounds of unsold goods.

Where to Donate Items for OppShop Sales

OppShop accepts donations at our drop-off location directly behind the thrift store, where our staff will help you unload the items.

To donate large and bulky pieces of furniture, call us to arrange for the collection of the items. Please keep in mind that our experienced team can turn down donations if they deem them inappropriate for our thrift store.

We also have several donation bins throughout Berks County. When you use these bins, we ask that you limit donations to DVDs, CDs, Blu-Ray discs; clothing; and books that fit in grocery-size bags. Larger garbage bags will not fit in the bins, and we strongly urge those with donations to leave the area around the bins clean.
