More About Opportunity House
Opportunity House has served the homeless men, women, and families of Berks County for almost 40 years. We provide emergency shelter paired with case management and supportive services to help residents overcome obstacles to securing and retaining housing.
As part of our mission, we offer early childhood education through the Second Street Learning Center and a recycle/reuse program based on the OppShop thrift store and warehouse. In addition, we operate a community garden and provide transitional and permanent housing units.
More About Opp Shop
The reuse/recycle program of Opportunity House relies on the work of OppShop. Area residents donate gently used items for sale in the thrift store, and those items that do not sell are recycled through our network of professional recyclers. Every dollar made from selling goods at OppShop is directed toward the shelter’s support. This program rescues 700,000 pounds of merchandise that would have otherwise wound up in the landfill.
Operating a thrift store allows clients of Opportunity House to select clothing that they need while they stay at our emergency shelter. This allows them to select items that best suit their needs.
