Opportunity House would like to present volunteer opportunities for those near Wyomissing, PA. Help us improve the lives of the homeless population of Berks County.
Established in 1984, Opportunity House serves as an emergency shelter for homeless men, women, children, and Veterans in the area. We provide many services for clients at the shelter and operate the Second Street Learning Center, OppShop thrift store, and recycling warehouse. All of these efforts require support from donors and volunteers.
Volunteer at Opportunity House
Preparing and serving meals – Opportunity House provides all residents with three meals and a snack daily. As you can imagine, we’re grateful for volunteers who sign up to prepare and serve meals. Volunteers often participate in a group from their church, civic, or social organization. This volunteer service is an excellent way to teach your children empathy and the value of serving others, but we ask that all participants be at least ten years of age.
A day of service – When registering at Opportunity House, you should expect a range of available duties. We can create an opportunity that suits your aptitudes, or you can use the opportunity to develop new abilities. Cleaning, painting, weeding the garden, sorting donations, and preparing spaces for residents are all tasks that need to be done, and many hands are welcome.
Assist with a fundraiser – Each year, Opportunity House holds several fundraisers, including a Golf Event; Souper Bowl; Wine, Women and Shoes; and Garden Party. We invite volunteers to help plan, organize, and serve for these fundraisers to live up to the expectations of Opportunity House and reap as much benefit as possible for the organization.
Help at OppShop – our retail thrift store location OppShop regularly receives donations of gently used items for resale. The proceeds go to Opportunity House, and our residents can also make selections from the thrift store. This location constantly needs volunteers to greet customers and sort, hang, fold, and display items for sale.

Financial gifts are the most direct way to support our work. Donate online by clicking here. Your gift can be a one-time offering or a recurring one, in your name, made in honor of a cause or person, or anonymous. We also accept checks, cash, stocks, and other financial support measures.
We also accept donated items. We need new, unopened items for the shelter itself. We request gently used household items, clothing, shoes, bags, accessories, furniture, and other re-saleable goods for the thrift store location. To donate these, you can drop off small bags of donations in the bins we have spread throughout the county or bring them to the donation center behind the thrift store. We also provide pickup for large furniture items, which you can schedule online or by phone.
